The Specials - Guilty 'Til Proved Innocent!

Though they'd be hard-pressed to match the musical intensity and political commitment of the original Specials lineup's heyday in the late '70s to early '80s, these seminal ska-punks acquit themselves quite respectably on this comeback effort. With most of the group's original members (though not co-frontman Terry Hall and keyboardist Jerry Dammers) on hand, the resurgent band refuses to pander to its living-legend status, and catchy, rhythmically skillful tunes like "It's You," "Fearful," "Bonediggin'," and "All Gone Wrong" have a thoughtful, upbeat spirit that honors the band's history without exploiting it.

A man called Adam - All My Favorite Things

If there were a united nations of revellers, and they were to gather on a beach in Ibiza to watch the sunrise, then A Man Called Adam's All My Favourite... would be the ideal backdrop to chilled-out post-club musings. A beautiful, genre-defying collection of songs, including some favourite classics from the 90s and some from the earlier Duende, this is music that glows. Every track sets its own mood, drawing from global influences in surprising and inventive ways, such as the spicy hip-swinging Latin flavour of "Yachts", the haunting African vocals on "Earthsings", or the jazzy, St Germain-esque vibe of "Techno Powers". Chunky, electronic dance beats sit comfortably with acid jazz, house and more simple melodies on the album, all of which are held together by the soulful lyrics that stem from the Sally Rodgers and Steve Jones partnership. Rodgers' vocal style has echoes of Madonna, particularly on "People Rule", which wouldn't sound out of place on Music, but with a warmth and resonance that is sometimes missing from the queen of pop. Comparisons with Everything But The Girl, Zero 7 and Massive Attack can be made, but All My Favourite… is a strikingly unique collection of sublime, sun-filled tracks with a chill-out vibe like no other. Capturing the magic and wonder of greeting a new day with sand between your danced-out toes on a Balearic island.

Our Favourite Shop

Weller took a lot of heat for trading the Jam's sound and fury for

the former (and this reviewer does) by no means excludes one from e

THE SINGULAR ADVENTURES OF THE STYLE COUNCIL

In retrospect, the Style Council has always been looked at as the (better part of a)
decade that constituted Paul Weller's lost in the wilderness period,
the time between his sharp, focused songs with the Jam and his more adult, reflective work as a solo artist. While it's undeniable that the period was marked by unevenness and experimentation, Weller and Mick Talbot's group chalked up their share of gems--it was just that for every "Long Hot Summer" there's "A Gospel"; for every "You're the Best Thing" and "My Ever Changing Moods" comes in, rounding out the above singles with other favourites, including "Speak Like a Child", Solid Bond in Your Heart", "Headstart for Happiness" and "How She Threw It All Away". In many ways, this "best of" foreshadows Weller's solo output: the best songs from the Style Council are those that are quiet and reflective; they feature breezy structures that let the songs breathe and shine through, here enhanced by bright synths and lounge-jazz arrangements rather than the Traffic-era guitar effects and classic keyboard sounds that would mark his later work.

Bad Manners - Heavy Petting

Most of the members of todays band had not even been born when bad manners
was at their original peak back in the days of british 2-tone. The album
Starts off strong with Don't knock the Baldheads, a deep, dark sounding
number that gets your feet moving. Another notable favorite is "Down Berry Wood",
or which no real audio can do justice to. It is an exemplary Ska Tune.
I can listen to this entire album all the way through and not skip
any tracks. it's one of the best in my collection of Ska CD's.
The so called "Fat sound" of bad manners is not for everyone.
If you want wimpy little Ska bands singing about how their feet hurt, if
you want full bodied,badassed Ska the way it was meant to be
